Art fairs galore! Not keen to Frieze? Try these
From one bunch of art fair fans to another, we are fully aware that Frieze still boasts the accomplishment of pioneering the art fair trend, give or take a few biennales here or there, but we have sought out a few mighty fine alternatives which should be on your radar in London this Autumn.
Moniker (London) – 11th – 14th October 2012
Moniker first established itself as the antithesis of the traditional upper class access only art fair in 2010, and its strong urban and street art appeal soon became its signature. Still offering urban and street art fans an art fair to call their own, Moniker now also offers many other contemporary art strands such as pop art and abstract realism. Unique features include its numerous individually curated project spaces and its urban warehouse meets shabby cool interior – and matching crowd for that matter. Artists to look out for include flag+bleach artist, Pam Glew (check out some of her work out in our shop), Niels ‘Shoe’ Muelman with his signature, ‘calligraffiti’ and paradoxical art sculptor, Nancy Fouts. Hush, Luke Cheuh, Ludo and Vermibus also join the line-up. Galleries include White Walls, Scream, Galerie Itinerrance (Paris) and Suben (Barcelona).

The Other Art Fair (London) – 22nd – 25th November 2012
The Other Art Fair’s unique USP is that all the artists exhibiting are not represented by a gallery – so what they take away from the fair in dosh, is 10o per cent theirs. Focusing on emerging and unrepresented art talent has made The Other Art Fair stand out from the crowd, not least because it also offers the visitor or first-time buyer a fantastic opportunity to have a go at spotting “the next big thing” themselves. Buy to invest or buy because you like, The Other Art Fair is worth a visit. Only 90 artists will be showing work from a stunning 7000 applications. Ernesto Canovas, who Beautiful Crime also sells the work of, will be exhibiting alongside our favourites, Jack Chester, Felix Lowe, Dianne Kaufman, a selection of the Fabelists, Sarah Howe and Normand Narielwalla.

SUNDAY Fair (London) – 11th-14th October 2012
SUNDAY offers commercial galleries the opportunity to exhibit in the relaxed setting of Ambika P3, a 14,000 square foot subterranean space. We’re not suggesting you wear your Sunday best mind, but we do suggest you attend SUNDAYschool, a public programme of events and projects by artists such as cura., Elephant, ICA, Kaleidoscope and Mousse will feature in the publications arena. Lack of booths or divisions make SUNDAY an inviting space, with the artists and galleries responding to it as they wish. Three of the participating galleries, Croy Nielson, Limoncello and Tulips & Roses run the show. Fresh talent and fresh audiences are their game.

Parallax (London) – 13th – 14th October 2012
Describing it’s ethos as a ‘direct art-to-consumer experience,’ Parallax encourages the viewer to ‘dare to be themselves.’ Not dissimilar to The Other Art Fair, Parallax offers artists the chance to exhibit without commission charges, to a whole host of buyers, collectors, critics and art leaders. The artists involved are encouraged to be experimental, providing onlookers with something different to encounter.

Multiplied (London) – 12th- 15th October 2012
Multiplied boasts some of the best leading and emerging art talent from a world-wide (and broad) range of galleries – 42 exhibitors and leading institutes to be exact. Here, there is art to suit every budget, whether you’re a first-time buyer or an experienced collector. Also check out the Rob Ryan they are offering in their raffle too – a sure-fire way to entice us all. Exhibiting galleries include Lazarides, Royal College of Art, Riflemaker, noshowspace, Marc Quinn, TAG Fine Arts and plenty more. Highlights include a series of talks, Nice To Meet You who leave their east London digs for the duration of the fair, to the grounds of Multiplied. Expect guest speakers Marc Quinn and Charles Avery to respond to your questions, after which you may find a set by Pixie Geldof and her band The Violets gracing your ears.
